Status: partial (backend + frontend source and registered tests exist; runner, browser, native, provider, and production evidence remain open) Key decision: ADR-023 — Email transport & scheduling (workerless topology)
Naming note. The Django app is
backend/apps/mail/— notemail/— to avoid shadowing Python’s stdlibemail.parser/email.messagefor MIME handling). All models, services, and URLs live underapps.mail.Relationship to F35 / F77. F35 Email Notifications is an outbound transactional/digest rail Lumi uses to notify users about Lumi activity (briefs, approvals, password resets) via a one-way provider. F82 is a different thing: a real, two-way email client + mailbox product — the user reads, writes, and manages business email inside Lumi, on their own domain. F35 sends from Lumi about Lumi; F82 sends and receives as the user, for their business. They share nothing at the model level; F82 may reuse F35’s DKIM/domain plumbing where it already exists (see §4.1).
1. Problem & CEO Job
See clearly + decide fast. Email holds the business a CEO in Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, or Riyadh cannot fit into a daily pulse: a delayed-shipment confirmation, credit-line reply, or customer one unanswered thread from churning. It sits in Gmail/Outlook/cPanel webmail, outside Lumi, making the most decision-dense channel invisible to the assistant that runs the morning. Context-switching loses the thread and leaves commitments buried in replies.
Lumi already ingests signals from connected sources (F33/F44). Email is a high-value source but also a surface where users must act: they reply, not merely receive alerts. It must be a first-class mailbox for the CEO and team. Inside Lumi, a reply can become a Commitment, an attached invoice a Risk, and a thread a Brief assignment. Without F82, the assistant cannot see the inbox.
This spec defines that end-game mailbox: a focused, fast, multi-address client for SMEs on their own domain, comparable to Google Workspace mail where a working leader needs it, not a clone of every Gmail surface.
2. User Stories & Acceptance Criteria
Roles map to Lumi’s RBAC (F73 capabilities over F02 presets): owner/admin manage domains and mailboxes; members use mailboxes they own or are granted access to; viewers have no mail surface. Every criterion below maps to at least one test in §7.
2.1 Domain & mailbox provisioning (owner/admin)
-
As an admin, I want to connect my company domain for email, so that my team sends and receives on
@mycompany.cominstead of a generic address.- Given an admin, when they POST a domain
mycompany.com, then anEmailDomainis created withstatus=pendingand the API returns the exact DNS records to publish (MX → Cloudflare Email Routing, SPFTXT, DKIMselector._domainkey TXT, DMARCTXT). - Given DNS records are published, when the admin clicks “Verify”, then Lumi checks all four
record groups live and flips
status=verifiedonly when MX + SPF + DKIM all resolve correctly; DMARC missing →status=verified_no_dmarc(usable, with a warning), never a hard block. - Given a verified domain, when an admin creates a
Mailboxceo@mycompany.combound to a member, then that member sees the mailbox in/mailand can send/receive on it. - Given a non-admin, when they attempt to create a domain or mailbox, then
403.
- Given an admin, when they POST a domain
-
As an admin, I want one user to own several addresses, so that a CEO can run
hong@andceo@(and a sharedsales@) from one Lumi login.- Given a member with a primary
Mailbox, when an admin adds an aliasceo@mycompany.com, then mail to either address lands in the same mailbox and the user can choose either as the From when composing. - Given a shared
Mailboxsales@mycompany.com(no single owner), when an admin grants a memberaccess_role=full, then that member can read it and send-assales@; withaccess_role=readthey can read but not send.
- Given a member with a primary
2.2 Reading & receiving (member)
- As a member, I want incoming mail to appear in my inbox in seconds, threaded by
conversation, so that I can follow a discussion without hunting.
- Given a verified domain, when an external sender emails
ceo@mycompany.com, then within the inbound pipeline anEmailMessage(direction=inbound) is created, attached to the correctEmailThread, labelledINBOX, and showsis_read=false. - Given a reply that carries
In-Reply-To/Referencesheaders, then it is grouped into the existing thread; given a reply that lost those headers, then it is grouped by normalized subject + shared participant within a 14-day window (else it starts a new thread). - Given an inbound message with attachments, then each attachment is stored (S3 via F34) and
listed on the message; inline images referenced by
cid:render in the body. - Given an inbound message that fails DMARC and matches spam heuristics, then it is labelled
SPAMinstead ofINBOXand never triggers a vacation auto-reply.
- Given a verified domain, when an external sender emails
2.3 Composing & sending (member)
-
As a member, I want a rich-text composer with Cc/Bcc, attachments, and my signature, so that I can write a proper business email without leaving Lumi.
- Given the composer, when I write with the WYSIWYG editor (bold/italic/lists/links/inline
image/quote), then the sent message contains both a sanitized
text/htmlpart and an auto-generatedtext/plainpart (multipart/alternative). - Given a recipient list, then To is required and Cc/Bcc are optional; Bcc recipients never appear in any header delivered to To/Cc recipients.
- Given a mailbox with a default
EmailSignature, then a new compose pre-fills the signature; replies append it below the quoted history. - Given attachments whose total size > 25 MB, then send is rejected client- and server-side
with
email.error_attachment_too_large(Cloudflare hard limit; see §3). - Given I press Send, then the message is enqueued, labelled
SENT, removed fromDRAFT, and anEmailDeliveryrow tracks its lifecycle (queued→sent→delivered/bounced). - Given I try to send From an address I don’t own or have send-access to, then
403(email.error_from_not_allowed) — a hard anti-spoofing rail.
- Given the composer, when I write with the WYSIWYG editor (bold/italic/lists/links/inline
image/quote), then the sent message contains both a sanitized
-
As a member, I want drafts to autosave, so that I never lose a half-written reply.
- Given an open composer, when I stop typing for 2s (or close it), then a
DRAFTEmailMessageis upserted; reopening restores To/Cc/Bcc/subject/body/attachments exactly.
- Given an open composer, when I stop typing for 2s (or close it), then a
2.4 Organizing (member)
- As a member, I want labels, archive, star, read/unread, trash, and spam, so that I can
keep the inbox to what needs me.
- Given a thread, when I Archive it, then it loses
INBOXbut keeps other labels and is still found by search; Trash moves it toTRASH(purged after 30 days); Spam moves it toSPAM. - Given custom
EmailLabels, when I apply/remove them (single or bulk), then the change is immediate and reflected in counts; Gmail-style — a message can carry many labels at once. - Given bulk selection, when I mark read/unread/star/label/archive/trash N threads, then one request applies the action to all and returns the updated unread counts.
- Given a thread, when I Archive it, then it loses
2.5 Search (member)
- As a member, I want to search my mail by words, sender, and subject, so that I can find
a thread from months ago in one query.
- Given a query
q, when I search, then results match subject, body text, and participant name/address across all mailboxes I can access, ranked by recency, keyset-paginated. - Given operators
from:,to:,subject:,has:attachment, label:,is:unread, then the query filters accordingly. - Given org A’s user searches, then no org B message is ever returned (tenant isolation).
- Given a query
2.6 Signatures, vacation, filters (member)
-
As a member, I want a per-address signature, so that
ceo@andsales@sign differently.- Given multiple addresses, each can have its own default
EmailSignature; the composer uses the signature of the selected From address.
- Given multiple addresses, each can have its own default
-
As a member, I want a vacation auto-responder, so that senders know I’m away.
- Given a
VacationResponderenabled with a date range, when an external sender emails me within the range, then they receive the auto-reply at most once per 4 days per sender. - Given the inbound message has
Auto-Submitted: auto-*,Precedence: bulk/list, an empty envelope-from, or comes from myself, then no auto-reply is sent (loop/backscatter guard). - Given the responder window has passed, then it auto-disables and no further replies go out.
- Given a
-
As a member, I want filter rules, so that routine mail self-organizes.
- Given an
EmailFilter(conditions: from/to/subject/contains; actions: apply-label, archive, mark-read, mark-spam, trash), when a matching message arrives, then the actions apply in order before the user ever sees it; an explicit “stop processing further filters” flag is honored.
- Given an
2.7 Lumi integration (member) — thin, opt-in
- As a CEO, I want to turn an email into a Lumi task/commitment, so that a promise buried
in a reply doesn’t get lost.
- Given an open message, when I click “Add to Lumi”, then a
SignalInboxItem(F32) is created from the message with anEvidenceSourcepointing at the email — confidence in the keyword range (0.6–0.8), never auto-promoted to ops.
- Given an open message, when I click “Add to Lumi”, then a
3. Scope Boundaries
- In (key features, end-game):
- Custom-domain email on Cloudflare: inbound via Cloudflare Email Routing, outbound via a Cloudflare Email Worker transport (§4.6), with SPF/DKIM/DMARC managed per domain.
- One user → one or many addresses: primary mailbox + aliases + shared mailboxes with access roles.
- Reading: threaded conversations, attachments (incl. inline
cid:images), read/unread, star. - Composing: WYSIWYG (TipTap) HTML+plaintext, To/Cc/Bcc, attachments, quoting, reply/reply-all/forward, per-address signatures, autosaved drafts.
- Organizing: system labels (Inbox/Sent/Drafts/Trash/Spam/Archive) + custom labels, bulk actions.
- Search across accessible mailboxes with operators.
- Vacation/out-of-office auto-responder with loop protection.
- Filter rules (conditions → actions).
- Outbound delivery tracking (queued/sent/delivered/bounced/complained) and inbound spam handling.
- Thin, opt-in bridge to Lumi (email → Signal Inbox with evidence).
- Multi-tenant isolation on every mailbox, message, and query.
- Out (deliberately not built — focus, not a Gmail clone):
- Migration/import of existing mail (IMAP/POP backfill from old providers) — post-v1; v1 starts fresh on the connected domain. (Tracked as an Open Question, §12.)
- IMAP/POP/SMTP client access (using Lumi mailboxes from Apple Mail/Outlook desktop) — out; Lumi web/native is the only client in v1.
- Calendar invites / RSVP parsing (F23 Calendar owns scheduling), contacts manager (use CRM F27 / org directory), tasks UI (F05), chat/IM (F29) — email links to these, doesn’t reimplement them.
- Scheduled send, snooze, undo-send window, smart-compose/AI drafting, mail-merge/bulk campaigns, read receipts, encryption (S/MIME, PGP), shared-mailbox conversation assignment workflows — all explicitly deferred; none are required for a leader’s working inbox.
- Lumi’s own transactional/digest notifications — that is F35, unchanged.
- Marketing/newsletter sending and list management — never (anti-spam doctrine).
4. Data Model
All models extend UUIDModel (UUID7 PK) and carry an organization FK unless noted. New Django

GLOSSARY (§10).
4.1 EmailDomain (org-owned)
The verified sending/receiving domain. May reuse the DKIM keypair F35 already provisions for the org if one exists; otherwise generates its own.

Outbound with multiple recipients fans out to one
EmailDeliveryper envelope recipient so a single bounce doesn’t mark the whole message failed.
4.6 Cloudflare transport (infra, not a DB model)
Inbound — Cloudflare Email Routing → Email Worker:
- Org domain’s
MXpoints at Cloudflare Email Routing; a catch-all routing rule sends every message to the Lumi inbound Email Worker (lumi-mail-in). - The Worker reads
message.raw(full MIME, ≤25 MB — Email Routing’s hard limit), the envelope (message.from,message.to), and Cloudflare’s SPF/DKIM/DMARC verdicts, thenPOSTs them to Lumi’s inbound webhook (§5.5) with anX-Lumi-SignatureHMAC over the body usingEmailDomain.cf_routing_secret. On non-2xx it returns a temporary failure so Cloudflare retries (no mail is silently dropped).
Outbound — Lumi → Cloudflare Email Worker (lumi-mail-out):
- Lumi builds the MIME (DKIM-signed with the domain’s private key), then submits it to the outbound Worker over an authenticated internal endpoint.
- The Worker relays it onto the public internet. Decision needed (ADR, §12): Cloudflare’s native
send_emailWorker binding can send replies to addresses that have written to the domain and to verified destinations — which already covers the dominant business case (replying to inbound threads) — but cold outbound to arbitrary new recipients requires a sending relay behind the Worker. v1 targets the reply/verified path first; theOutboundTransportinterface (send(mime, envelope) → provider_msg_id) keeps the relay swappable without touching the app.
This boundary means the Django app never speaks SMTP directly — it speaks to Cloudflare Workers — and
all DKIM/SPF/DMARC logic is config + key management, testable with a mock transport (MAIL_TRANSPORT=mock).
5. API Contract
All routes are JWT-authenticated and tenant-scoped except the inbound/delivery webhooks (HMAC). Base
prefix /api/mail/.
5.1 Domains & mailboxes (admin)
| Method | Path | Role | Request | Response | Errors |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GET/POST | /api/mail/domains/ | admin | {domain} | domain + required DNS records | 403, 409 (domain taken) |
| POST | /api/mail/domains/{id}/verify/ | admin | — | updated verification flags + status | 403, 404 |
| GET/POST/PATCH/DELETE | /api/mail/mailboxes/ | admin | {address,kind,owner,display_name} | mailbox | 403, 409 (address taken), 422 (domain not verified) |
| POST/DELETE | /api/mail/mailboxes/{id}/aliases/ | admin | {address} | alias | 403, 409 |
| GET/POST/DELETE | /api/mail/mailboxes/{id}/access/ | admin | {member,access_role} | grant | 403 |
5.2 Threads & messages (member)
| Method | Path | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| GET | /api/mail/threads/?mailbox=&label=INBOX&cursor= | member | Keyset-paginated by last_message_at+id; default label INBOX |
| GET | /api/mail/threads/{id}/ | member | Thread + ordered messages (bodies lazy via message endpoint) |
| GET | /api/mail/messages/{id}/ | member | Full sanitized body; marks is_read=true unless ?peek=1 |
| GET | /api/mail/messages/{id}/raw/ | member | Signed download of original MIME |
| POST | /api/mail/messages/ | member | Create DRAFT (compose/reply/forward share this) |
| PATCH | /api/mail/messages/{id}/ | member | Update a DRAFT (autosave) |
| POST | /api/mail/messages/{id}/send/ | member | Send a draft → outbound |
| POST | /api/mail/messages/bulk/ | member | `{ids:[],action:read |
| POST | /api/mail/messages/{id}/to-signal/ | member | Create F32 SignalInboxItem + EvidenceSource |
| POST | /api/mail/messages/{id}/attachments/ | member | Attach an F34 uploads.Upload to a DRAFT ({upload_id}); 422 over 25 MB total |
| DELETE | /api/mail/messages/{id}/attachments/{attachment_id}/ | member | Remove a draft attachment |
Attachment download URLs are F34 signed GET URLs returned on each EmailAttachment
(download_url); messages/{id}/raw/ returns a signed URL for the original MIME blob
(raw_mime_ref). Inbound attachments are stored as uploads.Upload rows (S3 via F34) and
linked on EmailAttachment.upload; outbound drafts embed attachment bytes into a
multipart/mixed MIME on send.
Reply/reply-all/forward are client-composed drafts: the FE pre-fills To/Cc, in_reply_to,
references, and quoted body from the source message, then uses the normal draft→send path. The
server validates from_addr ∈ the sender’s allowed addresses on send (email.error_from_not_allowed).

| GET | /api/mail/search/?q=&mailbox=&cursor= | member | Operators from: to: subject: label: has:attachment is:unread; Postgres FTS over subject + body_text + participants, ranked by recency. Scoped to accessible mailboxes only. |
5.5 Webhooks (no JWT — HMAC authenticated)
| Method | Path | Auth | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| POST | /api/mail/inbound/ | X-Lumi-Signature HMAC (cf_routing_secret) | Body: {raw_mime, mail_from, rcpt_to, spf, dkim, dmarc}. Resolves org via rcpt_to domain → EmailDomain. Idempotent on (mailbox, rfc_message_id). Returns 2xx only after durable store; else 5xx so Cloudflare retries. |
| POST | /api/mail/delivery/ | HMAC | Outbound transport status callbacks (delivered/bounced/complained) → updates EmailDelivery. |
| POST | /api/mail/cron/trash-purge/ | HMAC (MAIL_CRON_WEBHOOK_SECRET) | Cloudflare Cron: hard-delete TRASH-labelled messages >30 days old. Idempotent. |
| POST | /api/mail/cron/vacation-auto-disable/ | HMAC (MAIL_CRON_WEBHOOK_SECRET) | Cloudflare Cron: disable VacationResponders whose end_at has passed. Idempotent. |
| POST | /api/mail/cron/dns-reverify/ | HMAC (MAIL_CRON_WEBHOOK_SECRET) | Cloudflare Cron: re-run DNS verification for all EmailDomains; flips drifted domains to failed. Skips disabled. |
Cron endpoints fail closed: an unset MAIL_CRON_WEBHOOK_SECRET rejects all calls (401).
The Cloudflare Cron Trigger Worker code lives outside this repo (deploy/Workers); these
endpoints are its idempotent server-side counterpart per ADR-023.
5.6 Tenant scoping (mandatory rail)
- Every authenticated query is filtered by
organization_id=request.organization_idand by the member’s accessible-mailbox set (own +MailboxAccess). ATenantQuerySetMixin-basedMailQuerySetenforces both; no view ever callsEmailMessage.objects.get(id=...)unscoped. - The inbound webhook has no JWT, so it derives the tenant from the recipient:
rcpt_to→MailboxAlias/Mailbox.address→Mailbox.organization. A recipient with no matching mailbox in any org is rejected (550-equivalent) and never stored — preventing cross-tenant injection. - HMAC secrets are per-domain; a forged inbound POST without the right
cf_routing_secretis dropped.
5.7 AI output rule
The only AI-adjacent output is to-signal/ (§5.2), which creates a SignalInboxItem via the existing
F32 pipeline: the source email is linked as an EvidenceSource, confidence is in the keyword range
(0.6–0.8), never 1.0, never hardcoded, never auto-promoted to ops.
6. UI / UX
6.1 Routes & components
/mail→MailPage(three-pane: label rail · thread list · reading pane). Default labelINBOX./mail/:threadId→ reading pane focused on a thread (deep-linkable)./mail/compose(and an in-paneComposeSheet) →ComposeView./settings/email→EmailSettingsPage(tabs: Addresses · Signatures · Vacation · Filters · Domains[admin]). Reached from the Sidebar → Organization group (“Email & Domains”,AtSignicon, admin/owner-gated) — the admin’s discoverable path to sending-domain DNS (SPF/DKIM/DMARC), verification, and mailbox setup.
Server data via TanStack Query (never useEffect+fetch); thread/search lists via the shared
<DataTable> (F66) virtualized for long lists with keyset “load more”; settings forms via
React Hook Form + Zod (useZodForm, F63). Tested with MSW handlers (F67).
6.2 WYSIWYG composer
- Editor: TipTap (ProseMirror) with a minimal, on-brand toolbar — bold, italic, underline,
ordered/unordered list, link, blockquote (for replies), inline image (uploads via F34), and a
clear-formatting button. No font/color zoo — TASTE.md restraint. Output HTML is sanitized
(allowlist) on the way out and on render; a
text/plainalternative is generated from the doc. - From-address selector (only addresses the user may send-as), To/Cc/Bcc chips with validation, Bcc
hidden until toggled, attachment tray with size meter (turns into the
error_attachment_too_largestate past 25 MB), signature auto-inserted and editable.
6.3 States to design (every surface)
- Empty: no mail yet (“Your inbox is quiet” + how mail arrives); no mailbox provisioned (member) → “Ask your admin to set up your address”; no domain (admin) → setup CTA.
- Loading: skeleton rows in the thread list; spinner in reading pane.
- Error: send failed (retry), inbound domain unverified banner, transport degraded banner.
- Partial data failure (shared native): label metadata may fail independently of the thread
list. Keep the last successful label chips (or the default list if none loaded), show an authored
mail_labels_errorwarning withaction_retry, and clear the warning only after labels reload successfully. Pull-to-refresh uses the same retryable label path. - Populated: unread bold, star, label chips, attachment paperclip, vacation-on banner.
- No-permission: viewers and members without a mailbox see the empty-no-mailbox state, never a 403 wall.
6.4 Design system
shadcn components only (check frontend/src/components/ui/ first): Button, Input, Textarea, Badge, Checkbox, DropdownMenu, Dialog/Sheet, Tabs, Tooltip, Separator, ScrollArea, Avatar, Skeleton, Switch.
Semantic Lumi tokens only — bg-card text-foreground text-muted-foreground border-border text-primary,
label colors from var(--color-*-soft); no raw Tailwind palette (rail 4). Guard:
node frontend/scripts/check-design-tokens.mjs.
6.5 i18n — namespace email (en + vi together; other locale dirs get en placeholders)
Representative keys (full list authored with the implementation; both en/email.json and
vi/email.json updated in the same PR — rail 3):
| Key | en | vi |
|---|---|---|

7. Test Plan
Backend coverage must stay ≥97% (target ≥99%); a new E2E describe("Email") block is required.
All backend tests live in backend/tests/ (flat structure, ADR-004). A mock transport
(MAIL_TRANSPORT=mock) captures outbound MIME and simulates inbound webhooks.
| # | Case | Type | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Admin adds domain → DNS records returned, status pending | backend | tests/test_mail_domains.py::TestEmailDomainAPI |
| 2 | Verify flips status to verified only when MX+SPF+DKIM pass; missing DMARC → verified_no_dmarc | backend | same |
| 3 | Admin creates mailbox on verified domain; rejected (422) on unverified domain | backend | tests/test_mail_mailboxes.py |
| 4 | Alias delivers to mailbox; alias selectable as From | backend | same |
| 5 | Shared mailbox: read grant can read not send; send/full can send-as | backend | same |
| 6 | Inbound webhook creates message, threads it, labels INBOX, idempotent on (mailbox,rfc_message_id) | backend | tests/test_mail_inbound.py |
| 7 | Threading: In-Reply-To/References grouping; subject+participant fallback within 14d | backend | same |
| 8 | Inbound attachments + inline cid images stored via uploads (F34 Upload created, upload!=None, signed download_url) | backend | tests/test_mail_inbound.py, tests/test_mail_attachments.py |
| 9 | DMARC-fail + heuristics → labelled SPAM, no vacation reply | backend | same |
| 10 | Compose produces multipart/alternative (sanitized html + generated text) | backend | tests/test_mail_send.py |
| 11 | Bcc never appears in delivered To/Cc headers | backend | same |
| 12 | Send-as enforcement: From not owned → 403 | backend | same |
| 13 | Attachments > 25 MB → reject error_attachment_too_large | backend | same |
| 14 | Send creates EmailDelivery; per-recipient fan-out; bounce updates only that recipient | backend | same |
| 15 | Draft autosave upsert + restore (To/Cc/Bcc/subject/body/attachments) | backend | same |
| 16 | Labels: many-per-message, bulk actions update counts; archive/trash/spam transitions | backend | tests/test_mail_labels.py |
| 17 | Trash auto-purge after 30 days (Cloudflare Cron HMAC endpoint) | backend | tests/test_mail_cron.py |
| 18 | Search: operators, ranking, keyset pagination | backend | tests/test_mail_search.py |
| 19 | Vacation: ≤1 reply / 4 days per sender; suppressed for Auto-Submitted/bulk/self/empty-from; auto-disables after window | backend | tests/test_mail_vacation.py |
| 20 | Filters: conditions→actions applied in order before user sees mail; stop_processing honored | backend | tests/test_mail_filters.py |
| 21 | to-signal creates SignalInboxItem + EvidenceSource, confidence 0.6–0.8, no auto-promote | backend | tests/test_mail_signal.py |
| 22 | Cross-tenant isolation — org A never sees/searches org B mail; lists, get, search, raw | backend | tests/test_multitenancy.py::TestMailIsolation |
| 23 | Inbound for unknown recipient rejected, never stored (no cross-tenant injection) | backend | tests/test_mail_inbound.py |
| 24 | Inbound HMAC: wrong/absent signature dropped | backend | same |
| 25 | Role restriction: non-admin domain/mailbox CRUD → 403; viewer has no mail surface | backend | tests/test_mail_mailboxes.py |
| 26 | Member accessing a mailbox they have no grant on → 403/404 | backend | same |
| 27 | E2E: compose → send → appears in Sent; reply threads correctly | e2e | tests/e2e/lumi.spec.ts describe("Email") |
| 28 | E2E: receive (simulated inbound) → appears in Inbox unread → open marks read | e2e | same |
| 29 | E2E: label, archive, trash, search a thread | e2e | same |
| 30 | E2E: set signature + vacation in /settings/email, signature appears in compose | e2e | same |
8. Current Behavior
The backend mail module and web mail/settings routes exist, with focused backend and frontend tests.
This checkout does not establish that the feature is shipped end-to-end: the backend and frontend
runners are unavailable here, frontend/tests/e2e/mail.spec.ts contains environment-dependent skips,
no Android/iOS email surface or named-device evidence is present, and the default transport is a
mock. These boundaries are canonicalized in contracts/features/F82.cue
and the F82 implementation audit.
Adjacent existing surfaces that constrain the design:
- F35 Email Notifications already sends outbound transactional mail and may already provision a per-org DKIM key / sending domain; F82 reuses that key material where present (§4.1) rather than duplicating it.
- F34 User Uploads owns S3 storage, signed URLs, and AV scanning — email attachments ride on it.
- F32 Signal Inbox +
EvidenceSourceis the only sanctioned bridge from email into Lumi ops. - F80 Global Search uses Postgres FTS (ADR-018); F82’s mailbox search reuses the same FTS approach and may later contribute an email projection into global search (deferred, §12).
- F73 RBAC supplies the capability checks for admin (domains/mailboxes) vs member (use) vs viewer.
9. Error States
| # | Scenario | User-visible (i18n) | Internal | Log | Retry |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Domain DNS incomplete | email.domain_pending banner with records | status stays pending/verifying | INFO mail_domain_unverified | Manual re-verify; daily background re-check |
| 2 | Send transport down | email.error_send_failed, message stays DRAFT/queued | EmailDelivery.status=queued, retry w/ backoff | ERROR mail_send_transport_error | Exp. backoff 60→120→240s ×3 then failed |
| 3 | Outbound bounce | Thread shows “Delivery failed to X” | EmailDelivery.status=bounced, last_error set | WARN mail_bounced | None (hard bounce); soft bounce retried once |
| 4 | Inbound > 25 MB | Sender gets Cloudflare rejection (we never receive it) | n/a — rejected at Email Routing | n/a (Cloudflare side) | n/a |
| 5 | Inbound webhook store fails | n/a (sender side) | return 5xx so Cloudflare retries; nothing partial committed | ERROR mail_inbound_store_failed | Cloudflare retries delivery |
| 6 | Inbound for unknown recipient | n/a | rejected, not stored | INFO mail_inbound_unknown_recipient | n/a |
| 7 | From not owned | email.error_from_not_allowed | 403 before enqueue | WARN mail_send_as_denied | n/a |
| 8 | Attachments too large | email.error_attachment_too_large | 422 before enqueue | INFO mail_attachment_oversize | n/a |
| 9 | Quota exceeded | ”Mailbox full” toast | 422 on send/receive store | WARN mail_quota_exceeded | Admin raises quota / user clears Trash |
| 10 | HTML sanitization stripped active content | silent (rendered safe) | scripts/handlers/styles removed on store+render | DEBUG mail_html_sanitized | n/a |
| 11 | Vacation loop risk detected | silent (no reply sent) | suppressed by Auto-Submitted/bulk/self/throttle guard | DEBUG mail_vacation_suppressed | n/a |
| 12 | Shared-native label metadata unavailable | mail_labels_error warning + action_retry; thread list remains usable | labelsError retains the last successful chips and isLoadingLabels gates duplicate retries | no new log claim in this slice | Retry labels; clear warning on success |
10. Diagrams & Docs Touched
- backend/DIAGRAMS.md: add
apps/mail/— ER for EmailDomain/Mailbox/ Alias/Access/Thread/Message/Label/Attachment/Signature/Vacation/Filter/Delivery; the inbound (Cloudflare Email Routing → Worker → webhook → store) and outbound (compose → DKIM-sign → Worker → delivery callback) sequence diagrams;EmailDomainandEmailDeliverystate machines. - frontend/DIAGRAMS.md: add
/mail,/mail/:threadId,/mail/compose,/settings/emailto the route tree. - DIAGRAMS.md: add the Cloudflare email transport to the system topology.
- deploy/DIAGRAMS.md: add the two Cloudflare Workers (
lumi-mail-in,lumi-mail-out), DNS prerequisites, and the inbound/delivery webhook ingress. - GLOSSARY.md: new Mail Terms — Mailbox, Alias, Shared mailbox, EmailDomain, EmailThread, EmailLabel, VacationResponder, EmailFilter, EmailDelivery, DKIM/SPF/DMARC, Email Worker.
- ADR-023: settles the outbound transport (Cloudflare
send_emailWorker for reply/verified v1; cold-send relay v2 behind a thinOutboundTransport) and the workerless scheduling model (in-request processing + Cloudflare Cron, no Celery). Reference ADR-018 for the FTS approach reused by search.

Slice 25 — Permission-denial coverage: same-org inaccessible mailbox (2026-06-28)
Closes the last three genuinely reachable uncovered lines in views.py. Previous drivers
incorrectly described lines 1107 and 1147 as “unreachable via auth middleware”; in fact,
same-org members pass the serializer queryset filter but are rejected at perform_create.
Line 1301 (MyAddressesView dedup) fires when a member owns a mailbox AND has an explicit
access grant on it.

Slice 26 — Star toggle UI in ThreadList + ReadingPane (2026-07-02)
The 2026-07-02 §2 AC audit found the star was the one genuine gap: the backend fully supported
it (EmailMessage.is_starred, messages/bulk/ star/unstar actions, is_starred serialized on
messages) and §11 rows already claimed a ThreadList “star”, but no star control existed anywhere in
frontend/src/pages/mail/. This slice ships the missing UI and makes those rows honest.
| Item | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Thread-row star (fill = starred, outline = not) toggles latest message without opening the thread | ✅ | frontend/src/pages/mail/ThreadList.tsx (ThreadRow, stopPropagation) |
| Per-message star in the reading pane | ✅ | frontend/src/pages/mail/ReadingPane.tsx (message header) |
EmailThreadListSerializer exposes is_starred (latest message) + last_message_id (toggle target) | ✅ | backend/apps/mail/serializers.py; test tests/test_mail_threads.py::test_thread_list_exposes_star_state |
useToggleThreadStar / useToggleMessageStar — optimistic update + rollback via existing messages/bulk/ | ✅ | frontend/src/hooks/queries/useMail.ts (no new endpoint) |
i18n star_thread/unstar_thread/star_message/unstar_message in en + vi (+ en placeholders in all other locales) | ✅ | frontend/src/i18n/locales/*/email.json |
Star color uses semantic var(--color-signal-amber) token (no stock palette) | ✅ | design-token guard green |
Unit tests: thread-row star renders + click → bulkAction([id],'star') without navigating; reading-pane per-message star | ✅ | frontend/src/test/MailPage.test.tsx (MailPage — star (F82)) |
| Frontend: 0 TS errors; 11212 tests pass. Backend: 4700 passed, 98.02% coverage | ✅ | tsc --noEmit; pnpm test; pytest --cov |
Semantics: the thread-row star reflects and toggles the conversation’s latest message (the
last_message_id target); per-message stars in the reading pane are independent. This keeps the
displayed state consistent with the toggle target and reuses the existing bulk action verbatim.

lumi-mail-in/lumi-mail-out/cron triggers) — out-of-repo (deploy/Workers); the in-repo HMAC endpoints are their server-side counterparts - Rich attachment preview thumbnails — low priority, post-v1 enhancement
Codebase constraints (unchanged)
- The Django app must be
apps/mail(notemail) to avoid shadowing the stdlibemailpackage used for MIME parsing/building. - Outbound send and inbound processing run in-request / synchronously at the edge (the inbound
webhook does its work before returning 2xx; send submits to the Worker in-request) — this was
originally forced by no Celery worker existing at all (see F44 §13 / the 2026-06-16 no-worker
postmortem); a worker now exists (ADR-037) but
email keeps the edge-synchronous design deliberately (no latency/reliability reason to add the
dependency).
scripts/check-no-delay-in-views.pyno longer blanket-forbids.delay()/.apply_async()inviews.py(only an explicitqueue=nothing consumes) — don’t reintroduce one here without cause. Scheduled jobs (Trash purge, vacation auto-disable, daily DNS re-check) run from Cloudflare Cron Triggers per ADR-023. - Attachment storage, signed URLs, and AV scanning are owned by F34 — do not reinvent them.
- Email→ops must flow only through F32’s
SignalInboxItem+EvidenceSource(rails 2).
12. Open Questions / Decisions
- Outbound transport — RESOLVED (ADR-023). v1 =
Cloudflare
send_emailWorker for the reply/verified path (the dominant business case); v2 = a cold-send relay behind the samelumi-mail-outWorker, dropped in via a secondOutboundTransportimplementation when a customer needs warm cold-send — no app/model/API change. - Background scheduling — RESOLVED (ADR-023). No Celery: inbound/outbound process in-request (Cloudflare retries on 5xx); periodic jobs (30-day Trash purge, vacation auto-disable, daily DNS re-verify, soft-bounce retry) run from Cloudflare Cron Triggers hitting idempotent HMAC endpoints, with lazy read-time fallbacks.
- DKIM key custody — RESOLVED (ADR-023). Generate per-domain RSA-2048 keys in Lumi; private key in KMS/secret store (only a ref in the DB), reusing F35’s per-org key material where present. See §4.1.
- IMAP/POP backfill (migration). Out for v1; revisit once a customer needs their history moved from an old provider. Would be a separate spec.
- Email projection into F80 global search. Should mailbox messages also surface in the global
/api/search/? Privacy-sensitive (per-mailbox ACL ≠ org-wide). Deferred; dedicated mail search in v1 (§5.4). - Spam strategy depth. v1 leans on Cloudflare verdicts + DMARC + light heuristics. A learned classifier is out of scope until volume justifies it.
13. Bug / Change Log
2026-08-03 — Make populated Mail proof reproducible (COMM-03)
Type: Mobile reliability / evidence-custody hardening
Summary:
- Added a lifecycle-owned Android runner that creates a disposable owner organization and uses the existing idempotent worksurface seeder to create a verified domain, active mailbox, unread INBOX thread, and owner access before launching the app.
- The runner refuses an occupied runtime/backend, verifies the local device-to-backend route, attests the installed APK against the built artifact, runs the populated Mail list → reading journey, and verifies tenant cleanup after the run.
- Registered the runner policy as
F82.AC005.COMM03_ANDROIDand linked it to the mobile plan.
Scope boundary:
- This removes fixture and runner ambiguity; it does not claim named-device, provider, deliverability, or production evidence, and it does not change the COMM-03 PM score.
Tests:
scripts/tests/test_comm03_mail_runtime_policy.pyscripts/tests/test-comm03-mail-flow.shscripts/run-android-mail-proof.sh(syntax/policy checked; runtime requires the guarded Android environment described indocs/test-plan/f82-email-mobile.md)
2026-07-16 — Mobile: make Mail Compose keyboard proof deterministic (COMM-05)
Type: Testability / UX verification hardening
Summary:
- Omit the phone shell’s bottom navigation while the IME is visible. This frees
Scaffoldspace for the composer while preserving its existingimePadding()ownership and restoring navigation when the keyboard closes. - Give the To, Cc, Bcc, Subject, and Message controls stable Compose semantics IDs so the Android keyboard tour can focus each field without relying on translated labels.
- Add a single sequential Maestro journey that opens Workspace → Mail → Compose, separately asserts the composer remains visible immediately after focus and after recipient input, then reaches the long Message field and Send action.
Scope boundary:
- This protects the composer layout while preserving its existing
imePadding()ownership. It does not claim populated mailbox, send-delivery, named-device, or PM scoring proof. The Maestro journey is emulator UI evidence only; it does not score the audit.
Tests:
android/app/src/test/kotlin/com/locuno/lumi/android/ui/MailComposeKeyboardSourceTest.ktandroid/app/src/test/kotlin/com/locuno/lumi/android/ui/PhoneNavigationSourceTest.kt.maestro/critical/41_mail_compose_keyboard.yamldocs/test-plan/f82-email-mobile.md
Evidence recorded 2026-07-16:
- Focused source tests passed:
MailComposeKeyboardSourceTestandPhoneNavigationSourceTest. - A fresh
:app:assembleDevDebugAPK passed the focused Android Maestro tour onLumi_Pixel7_API35: recipient focus and input preserved the composer; the focused Message field, keyboard, and Send control were visible together. - This is simulator UI evidence only. It does not prove delivery or replace the same-day named Android floor-device and iPhone 12 walkthroughs required for PM scoring.
2026-07-16 — Decision: retain the shared-shell IME fix during rebase
- Collision: this lane measured
WindowInsets.imedirectly; currentorigin/mainusesWindowInsets.isImeVisibleand excludes the IME from navigation-bar insets. - Authority: the shared design-system implementation on current
origin/mainowns phone-shell measurement and is more specific than this lane’s local variant. - Evidence: rebased source tests, a fresh
:app:assembleDevDebug, and the focused41_mail_compose_keyboard.yamlAndroid emulator journey all passed. - Decision: retain upstream’s IME visibility and navigation-inset implementation; keep this lane’s stable Compose IDs, focused journey, F82 contract trace, and evidence.
- Rejected: the local inset-bottom calculation, because it duplicated the upstream state API without preserving its explicit navigation-bar inset boundary.
- Verification: the focused source tests and single-emulator Maestro proof above.
- Follow-up: PM captures same-day named Android floor-device and iPhone 12 evidence before any audit score changes.
2026-07-14 — Mobile: harden populated Mail list verification targets (COMM-03)
Type: Mobile list / verification hardening
Summary:
- Added stable list, label-filter, thread-row, and compose-FAB targets to the shared Mail list.
- Added a source guard for populated rows, refresh, load-more, reading, compose, and recovery wiring.
Scope boundary:
- Source hardening only. COMM-03 populated thread data, same-day visual proof, and named-device evidence remain PM-owned mobile-audit work.
Tests:
git diff --checkPYENV_VERSION=system python3 scripts/check_docs_truth.pybash scripts/check-platform-parity.sh
2026-07-14 — Mobile: keep Mail Reading timestamps localized and honest (COMM-04)
Type: UX fix (shared KMP mail reading)
Summary:
- Mail Reading now hides an unparseable timestamp instead of rendering the raw ISO payload, preserving the same honest-date rule used by the other mobile surfaces.
- Older message dates use the shared localized month resources and a bilingual email-specific date template instead of hard-coded English abbreviations.
- Added a stable
mail_reading_screentag and source assertions for the localized date path and raw-date suppression.
Scope boundary:
- Source hardening only. COMM-04 populated mailbox evidence and named-device scoring remain PM-owned mobile-audit work.
Tests:
git diff --checkPYENV_VERSION=system python3 scripts/check_docs_truth.pybash scripts/check-platform-parity.sh
2026-07-14 — Mobile: keep Mail Compose Send above the keyboard (COMM-05)
Type: UX fix (shared KMP form layout)
Summary:
- Replaced the shared
MailComposeScreenbottom-alignedBoxoverlay with a weighted scroll column and an in-flow Send CTA, matching the proven project and deal form pattern. - Kept root
imePadding()and addedmail_compose_screen/mail_compose_sendsemantics tags so the keyboard-critical device tour can target the exact surface and action. - Added
MailComposeKeyboardSourceTestto prevent the overlay pattern from returning silently.
Scope boundary:
- Source hardening only. COMM-05 keyboard interaction, populated mailbox data, named-device evidence, and scoring remain PM-owned mobile-audit work.
Tests:
git diff --checkPYENV_VERSION=system python3 scripts/check_docs_truth.pybash scripts/check-platform-parity.sh
2026-07-13 — Mail ledger org-hash constraints and bounded cursor counts
Mail remains unpartitioned today. Its future conversion is now mechanical: every
message/label/delivery uniqueness rule includes organization, child rows already carry
that key for co-partitioning, and message access indexes lead with organization. Thread
and search cursors keep stable (-last_message_at,-id) ordering while the legacy count
key becomes bounded with explicit count_is_capped metadata.
2026-07-02 — Stale test-class reference corrected (§7 row 1)
Type: Documentation Fix
Summary:
- §7 row 1 previously referenced
tests/test_mail_domains.py::TestEmailDomain, a bare class that does not exist in the file.test_mail_domains.pyhas four test classes:TestEmailDomainModel,TestEmailDomainAPI,TestEmailDomainVerifyAPI,TestEmailDomainFQDNValidation. Row 1 tests “Admin adds domain → DNS records returned, status pending” — this is an API-level test covered byTestEmailDomainAPI(line 495). Updated accordingly (verified by grep).
2026-07-02 — Star toggle UI shipped (ThreadList + ReadingPane)
Type: Feature (frontend UI + minimal read-only serializer field) — closes the one gap from the 2026-07-02 §2 AC audit.
Summary:
- Added a star toggle to each
ThreadListrow (fill when starred, outline otherwise; click toggles the conversation’s latest message and stops propagation so it does not open the thread) and a per-message star inReadingPane. - Wired both to the existing
POST /api/mail/messages/bulk/star/unstaraction via newuseToggleThreadStar/useToggleMessageStarTanStack Query mutations with optimistic update + rollback. No new endpoint. - Exposed
is_starred(latest message) +last_message_idonEmailThreadListSerializerso the thread row has state and a toggle target (the row payload previously carried neither). - i18n:
star_thread/unstar_thread/star_message/unstar_messageinen+vi, with English placeholders across all other localeemail.jsonfiles (key parity). - Star color uses the semantic
var(--color-signal-amber)token — design-token guard green.
Reason:
- The backend and §11 audit rows already implied a star existed, but no star control was present in
frontend/src/pages/mail/. This was spec/reality drift; the feature is now genuinely shipped.
Impact:
ThreadList.tsx,ReadingPane.tsx,useMail.ts,endpoints-adjacent types, all localeemail.json,serializers.py(+test_mail_threads.py),MailPage.test.tsx,SearchResultsPane.test.tsx(fixture fields).
Tests:
- Frontend: 0 TS errors; 11212 unit tests pass (new
MailPage — star (F82)block). - Backend: 4700 passed, 98.02% coverage; new
test_thread_list_exposes_star_state.
2026-07-02 — Spec drift fix: checked all 29 §2 ACs; status updated to shipped
Type: Documentation (spec accuracy — all ACs were [ ] despite §11 confirming all 25 slices shipped).
Summary:
- All 29
[ ]ACs in §2 flipped to[x]— confirmed shipped against §11 Implementation Audit (Slices 1–25 all ✅; comprehensive coverage: domains, mailboxes, inbound pipeline, compose/send, drafts, labels, search, signatures, vacation responder, filters, email→signal bridge). - Spec status updated from “agreed” → “shipped (backend + frontend; Slices 1–25 all ✅)”.
- No code changes.
2026-06-23 — Spec created
Type: Feature
Summary:
- Initial end-game spec for F82 Email (Workspace Mailboxes): custom-domain email over Cloudflare (Email Routing inbound + Email Worker outbound), one-user-many-addresses (aliases + shared mailboxes with access roles), WYSIWYG (TipTap) compose with Cc/Bcc/attachments/signatures, threaded reading, labels/folders + bulk actions, search with operators, vacation responder with loop protection, filter rules, outbound delivery tracking, and a thin opt-in bridge to Lumi’s Signal Inbox. Deliberately excludes IMAP/POP client access, migration/backfill, scheduled-send, encryption, mail-merge, and AI drafting (§3).
Reason:
- Email is the highest-value, most decision-dense channel a CEO runs that Lumi currently can’t see or act in. F82 brings it inside the workspace so replies, attachments, and commitments stop leaking out of the assistant’s view.
Impact:
- New
backend/apps/mail/app,/mail+/settings/emailfrontend surfaces, two Cloudflare Workers, and per-domain DNS (MX/SPF/DKIM/DMARC). Distinct from F35 (Lumi’s own notification rail).
Tests:
- Spec-only — test plan defined in §7; no code yet.
Notes:
- App is
apps/mail, neverapps/email(stdlib shadowing). All processing runs in-request (no Celery worker deployed). Two structural decisions (outbound transport, background scheduling) require an ADR before implementation — see §12.
2026-06-23 — Slice 2: Domains & mailboxes admin API shipped
Type: Feature
Summary:
EmailDomainViewSet(List/Retrieve/Create +verifyaction): DKIM keypair generation via openssl subprocess; routing-secret generation; DNS verification via dnspython (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC); status transitions pending → verified / verified_no_dmarc / failed.MailboxViewSet(full CRUD +aliases_list,alias_detail,access_list,access_detailactions): 422 for unverified domain, 409 for duplicate address/alias, system-label seeding on create, org-scoped FK querysets in serializers.- 73 new tests across
test_mail_domains.pyandtest_mail_mailboxes.py; all solid-test rails pass. dnspython>=2.7,<3.0added topyproject.toml.
Reason:
- §7 cases 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 25, 26 required; all green. Slice 2 is complete per the improvement
ledger at
docs/improvements/2026-06/week-26/f82-domains-mailboxes-admin.md.
Impact:
- 5 new files:
dkim_utils.py,dns_records.py,dns_verify.py,serializers.py,views.py,urls.py;pyproject.tomlupdated;config/urls.pyupdated;test_mail_domains.pyextended;test_mail_mailboxes.pycreated.
Tests:
- 3612 passed, 13 skipped, 98% coverage (backend full suite).
2026-06-23 — Slice 3: Inbound pipeline shipped
Type: Feature
Summary:
InboundWebhookView(POST /api/mail/inbound/, no JWT, HMAC-SHA256 viaX-Lumi-Signature): tenant-by-recipient resolution (rcpt_to→ domain lookup → HMAC verify → mailbox resolve); 404 for unknown recipient (permanent, no retry); 401 for bad/absent signature; 500 for internal errors (Cloudflare retries).parse_raw_mime(stdlibemail+html.parser): extracts From/To/Cc/Subject/Message-ID/ In-Reply-To/References, multipart/alternative HTML + text bodies, attachments, inline CID images.sanitize_html: allowlist (40 allowed tags, per-tag attribute restrictions); strips<script>,<style>,on*event handlers, javascript:hrefs, data:URIs (exceptcid:); addsrel="noopener noreferrer"to external<a>links. No new dependencies.html_to_text: auto-generatetext/plainfrom HTML if no plain part present.normalize_subject+find_or_create_thread: In-Reply-To/References first; subject+participant fallback within 14-day window; new thread on no match.process_inbound: idempotent on(mailbox, rfc_message_id); labels INBOX or SPAM (on DMARC fail); createsEmailAttachmentrecords (upload=None; S3 via F34 in later slice); updates threadmessage_count/has_unread/last_message_at.- 60 new tests in
test_mail_inbound.py; §7 cases 6, 7, 8, 9, 23, 24 all green.
Reason:
- Inbound pipeline is the prerequisite for every reading/composing surface. Without it, mail cannot land in Lumi and all downstream slices (reading UI, composer, search) have no data.
Impact:
- 3 new files:
mime_utils.py,threading.py,inbound.py;views.pyextended withInboundWebhookView;urls.pyupdated;test_mail_inbound.pycreated.
Tests:
- 3716 passed, 13 skipped, 97.55% coverage (backend full suite).

2026-06-25 — Slice 6: Composer shipped
Type: Feature
Summary:
- Backend new endpoint:
GET /api/mail/my-addresses/(MyAddressesView): returns all addresses the authenticated member can send from — their own mailbox primary address, their own aliases, shared mailboxes withsend/fullgrant, and those mailboxes’ aliases. Inactive/suspended mailboxes excluded. Deduplicated by mailbox ID (a mailbox that is both owned and granted appears once). Org-scoped.
- Frontend new components:

2026-06-24 — Slice 9: Lumi bridge (email → Signal Inbox) shipped
Type: Feature
Summary:
backend/apps/mail/signal_bridge.py—bridge_message_to_signal(message, member): createsEvidenceSource(source_type="email", confidence=0.7 in metadata_json)+SignalInboxItem(status="captured", capture_channel="connector")atomically; never auto-promotes, never callsextract_proposals(), never hardcodes 1.0 confidence.EvidenceSource.SOURCE_TYPE_CHOICESextended with("email", "Email")— Django-level only, no migration needed.EmailMessageViewSet.to_signalaction:POST /api/mail/messages/{id}/to-signal/→ HTTP 201{"signal_inbox_item_id": "<uuid>"}. 2026-06-25 — Slice 10: Cloudflare Cron HMAC endpoints shipped
Type: Feature
Summary:
- Three idempotent HMAC-authenticated Django endpoints callable by Cloudflare Cron Triggers:
POST /api/mail/cron/trash-purge/(30-day Trash purge, §7 case 17),POST /api/mail/cron/vacation-disable/(expired responder cleanup),POST /api/mail/cron/dns-reverify/(daily DNS health re-check). backend/apps/mail/cron.py— three pure DB functions with idempotency guarantees.MAIL_CRON_SECRETadded to test settings.- 27 new tests: HMAC gate (9), trash purge (7), vacation disable (5), DNS reverify (6).
backend/DIAGRAMS.mdanddeploy/DIAGRAMS.mdupdated with cron sequence + topology.- Honest deploy note: Cloudflare Workers not deployed from cloud runner (no CF API access).
Tests:
- 27 new backend tests; full suite 4309 passed / 97.29% coverage.
2026-06-25 — Slice 10b: F34 attachments + compose tray + E2E + mobile shipped
Type: Feature
Summary:
- F34 attachment integration:
backend/apps/mail/attachments.py—store_attachment_bytes(inbound →uploads.Upload),store_raw_mime(raw_mime_ref),signed_download_url(S3 presigned GET + non-S3 fallback). Inbound now linksEmailAttachment.upload(no longer None). NewEmailAttachmentSerializer.download_url; attachments returned on message reads.messages/{id}/raw/signed-MIME action;messages/{id}/attachments/attach/detach actions (25 MB cap →email.error_attachment_too_large). Outboundbuild_outbound_mimenow wraps the alternative part inmultipart/mixedand embeds attachment bytes. - Frontend: ComposeSheet attachment tray (presign→S3→complete→addAttachment,
size meter, 25 MB error, remove); ReadingPane signed download links for non-inline
attachments.
mailApi.addAttachment/removeAttachment,EmailAttachment+EmailMessageFulltypes. 5 new i18n keys (en + vi + 60 locale dirs). 2 new ComposeSheet tests. - Demo seed + E2E:
seed_demo_lumi.py:_seed_mailprovisions a verifieddemo.localdomain,ceo@demo.localmailbox, and one inbound thread.frontend/tests/e2e/mail.spec.tscovers §7 cases 27–30 (compose→send→Sent, inbound→Inbox→mark-read, search, settings signature+vacation), resilient to un-provisioned environments via graceful skips.
Reason:
- Closes the last open F82 slices (10 + F34 attachment integration) so the web mailbox is genuinely “done”: users can send/receive real attachments and the retention/vacation/DNS-drift housekeeping has a server-side home.
Impact:
- Backend: new
cron.py,attachments.py;views.py,urls.py,serializers.py,inbound.py,outbound.py,config/settings/{base,test}.py,seed_demo_lumi.pymodified; newtests/test_mail_cron.py,tests/test_mail_attachments.py;tests/test_mail_inbound.py+tests/test_mail_send.pyextended. - Frontend:
ComposeSheet.tsx,ReadingPane.tsx,endpoints.ts,useMail.ts, 62email.jsonlocale files,ComposeSheet.test.tsxmodified; newtests/e2e/mail.spec.ts. - Out-of-repo: the Cloudflare
lumi-mail-in/lumi-mail-out+ Cron-Trigger Worker code (deploy/Workers) — these endpoints are its idempotent server-side counterpart.
Tests:
- Backend: 469 mail tests pass (cron.py + attachments.py 100%; inbound.py 94%).
- Frontend:
tsc --noEmitclean; ComposeSheet/MailPage/SearchResultsPane suites pass; design-tokens +validate-i18nclean.
2026-06-25 — Slice 12: Polish to convergence

2026-06-25 — Slice 13: mime_utils coverage hardening
Type: Polish / Quality
Changed:
backend/apps/mail/mime_utils.py: removed dead code (_parse_address_header+_extract_addresses— 34 lines, never called by any code path;_safe_addr_listis the active address-parsing path). Removed two unreachabletry/exceptblocks (email.message_from_bytesfallback and_decode_header_valueexception handler — neither function raises in practice).backend/tests/test_mail_inbound.py: addedTestMimeUtilsCoverageHardeningclass (15 tests) covering all previously-missed branches: disallowed HTML tags/attributes, entity/char refs, quoted display names, valid/malformed Date headers, non-multipart HTML messages, unusual multipart subtypes, RFC 2047-encoded subjects, empty header values, and_decode_partNone-payload + exception paths.
Tests:
- Backend: 4400 passed, 98.11% total coverage, zero failures.
mime_utils.py78% → 100%.apps/mailtotal 95% → 97%.
2026-06-25 — Bug fix: ComposeDialog.test.tsx TipTap jsdom regression
Type: Bug fix / Test quality
Root cause:
@tiptap/extensionsupgraded its placeholder extension to use viewport-boundary tracking (getViewportBoundaryPositions), which callsdocument.elementFromPoint. This API is not implemented in jsdom.ComposeSheet.test.tsxalready had the correct mock (vi.mock('@tiptap/react', ...));ComposeDialog.test.tsx— added in slice 6 — did not.
Changed:
frontend/src/test/ComposeDialog.test.tsx: addedvi.mock('@tiptap/react', ...)matchingComposeSheet.test.tsxpattern (stubuseEditor+EditorContent).pnpm-lock.yaml: removed stale@tiptap/pmdirect-specifier entry (not inpackage.json; cleaned up bypnpm install).
Tests:
- Frontend: 10,761 tests pass (158 files), 0 failures. Previously 7 failing in
ComposeDialog.test.tsx. - Backend: 4419 passed, 98.10% total coverage, zero failures.
2026-06-26 — Slice 14: POLISH.md audit docs + Status flip
Type: Polish / Documentation
Summary:
- Wrote three honest audit docs backed by code review:
docs/security/F82-email.md(8/10): HMAC constant-time, dual tenant isolation, anti-spoof, Bcc strip, HTML allowlist sanitizer, 25 MB cap, DKIM signing, confidence-capped AI bridge. 3 v1 gaps documented: DKIMlocal://dev scheme has no prod enforcement, inbound rate-limit delegated to Cloudflare, pre-decode MIME size check absent.docs/ui-ux/F82-email.md(UI 7, UX 7): three-pane layout, TipTap WYSIWYG, 40+ locale i18n, design tokens clean. Gaps: no keyboard shortcuts, mobile breakpoint unverified.docs/performance/F82-email.md(8/10): cursor pagination, Postgres FTS, keyset ordering, 2-query accessible-mailbox pattern. Gaps: no stored SearchVectorField+GinIndex at high volume, an exact COUNT(*) per page request (superseded 2026-07-13 by ADR-043’s bounded count).
- Updated
docs/POLISH.mdF82 row:— | — | — | — | —→[7] | [7] | 9 | [8] | [8]. - Flipped
docs/MVP_SCOPE.mdF82 Status 🚧 → ✅ (web platform complete; mobile KMP stays 🚧).
Reason:
- Previous slice-12 improvement doc claimed “POLISH.md scores added” but the actual file showed all dashes. Previous slice-11 claimed Status ✅ but the matrix still showed 🚧. This slice closes that documentation drift.
Impact:
- No code changes. Backend 4419 tests, 98.10% coverage unchanged. Frontend 10926 tests unchanged.
- F82 POLISH scores are now honest and backed by linked audit docs.
- F82 Status is ✅ — the web workspace is complete; mobile native shell verification is tracked separately under the iOS/Android/Mac platform cells.
Tests:
- No test changes (docs-only). All tests remain green.
2026-06-26 — Coverage hardening final + dj_settings crash fix
Type: Bug fix / Test coverage
Summary:
- Bug fix:
NameError: name 'dj_settings' is not definedinapps/ai/services.py. Addedfrom django.conf import settings as dj_settingsat line 3. The name was used at four call sites (lines 902, 1200, 1662, 1936) but never imported; caught bytest_ai_synthesis.py::test_mock_chat_blocked_empty_vi. - 19 new targeted tests closing previously-open coverage gaps in
apps/mail:test_mail_inbound.py(3 new): malformed base64 → 400; INBOX label missing → warning log;try_vacation_replyexception → ERROR log.test_mail_signal.py(1 new class, 1 test): orphan EvidenceSource recovery (signal_bridge.pylines 47-49) — EvidenceSource exists but SignalInboxItem deleted → fresh pair created.test_mail_send.py(10 new): CRLF separator path, no separator returns unchanged, key-load failure, RSA-sign failure, headers-skip-no-colon, non-draft ValidationError, no-recipients ValidationError, DKIM unexpected error log, missing SENT label silently ignored, missing DRAFT label silently ignored.test_mail_filters.py(5 new): action raises exception → ERROR logged; swap-label source missing → silently ignored; signature for inaccessible mailbox → 400/403; filter for inaccessible mailbox → 400/403.
- Overall backend: 4613 passed, 98.03% coverage — all 212 mail tests green.
Reason:
- The previous session’s improvement doc
f82-polish-convergence.mdclaimed several targeted tests were added (e.g.test_inbound_malformed_base64_returns_400) but they weren’t present in the actual test files. Thedj_settingsimport bug was latent inservices.pyand unrelated to F82 but caught while running the full suite.
Impact:
backend/apps/ai/services.py: 1-line import fix.backend/tests/test_mail_inbound.py,test_mail_signal.py,test_mail_send.py,backend/tests/test_mail_filters.py: 19 new tests added.
Tests:
- 4613 passed, 98.03% coverage. Zero failures.
2026-06-26 — Slice 16: Route migration — dead App.tsx → TanStack routeTree.ts
Type: Bug Fix (Critical)
Summary:
- Root cause:
/mail,/mail/$threadId,/settings/emailwere registered inApp.tsx, which is a legacy test fixture never mounted in production.main.tsxrenders onlyRouterProviderfromroutes/routeTree.ts(TanStack Router). Any navigation to/mailtriggered TanStack’s catch-all route (path: '$') and redirected to/work/today, making the entire F82 email surface unreachable in the shipped app. - Fix: Added all 3 routes to
routes/routeTree.tsunderappLayoutRoute, usinglazyWithPreload(ADR-020 intent preloading). Zero code changes toMailPage.tsxorEmailSettingsPage.tsx— both already import from@/lib/router(TanStack shim). App.tsxkept unchanged — it is a deliberate test fixture inROUTER_ALLOWLIST.
Reason:
- Discovered during the §11 gap-verification pass:
grep "mail\|Mail" src/routes/routeTree.tsreturned empty;main.tsxconfirmed App.tsx was never imported.
Impact:
frontend/src/routes/routeTree.ts: 3 route definitions added + 3 entries inaddChildren().frontend/DIAGRAMS.md: route tree diagram updated to reflect TanStack param syntax.
Tests:
- No backend changes. Frontend: no new test cases (route registration is a structural change
verifiable via TypeScript + E2E). Zero TypeScript errors (
tsc --noEmit).
2026-06-26 — Slice 17: Gmail-style keyboard shortcuts (c / r / e)
Type: Enhancement (Polish)
Summary:
- Added Gmail-style single-key shortcuts for the
/mailsurface:c→ compose new message,r→ reply to last message in active thread,e→ archive active thread. - Uses existing
@tanstack/react-hotkeysuseHotkeyhook (ADR-020), same pattern asuseCrmNewDealShortcut.tsanduseEscapeToClose.ts. - All shortcuts use
ignoreInputs: true(suppressed in inputs/textarea/contenteditable) andenabled: !composeOpen(suppressed while compose dialog is open — belt-and-suspenders guard against TipTap conflicts). rlives inReadingPane(notMailPage) because it needsthread.messages[length-1]in scope; it is called before any early returns to comply with React rules of hooks.- Closes the “No Gmail-style keyboard shortcuts” gap from
docs/ui-ux/F82-email.mdaudit (UI 7/10, UX 7/10 — this gap was one of the two reasons both scores were stuck at 7).
Impact:
frontend/src/hooks/useMailKeyboardShortcuts.ts(new)frontend/src/pages/mail/MailPage.tsx(modified — imports hook +useBulkMailAction, calls hook, passescomposeOpento ReadingPane)frontend/src/pages/mail/ReadingPane.tsx(modified —composeOpenprop +Rhotkey before early returns)frontend/src/test/MailKeyboardShortcuts.test.tsx(new — 5 unit tests)docs/improvements/2026-06/week-26/f82-keyboard-shortcuts.md(new — improvement doc)
Tests:
- 5 new unit tests all pass. Zero TypeScript errors. Design token check clean.
2026-06-27 — Slice 18: UX score update — documentation drift after keyboard shortcuts
Type: Documentation correction
Summary:
docs/ui-ux/F82-email.mdwas authored on 2026-06-26 (slice 14) before slice 17 added Gmail-style keyboard shortcuts on the same day. The audit explicitly stated keyboard shortcuts were one of the two gaps holding UX at 7 and promised “+0.5 UX if added.”- Slice 17 shipped
c(compose),r(reply),e(archive) viauseMailKeyboardShortcutshook + ReadingPane integration + 5 unit tests — but the audit doc and POLISH.md were never updated. - This slice corrects that drift: keyboard shortcut gap flipped to ✅, UX score 7 → 8 in
the audit doc, POLISH.md F82 UX cell
[7]→[8].
Reason:
- POLISH.md said UX was 7 but the codebase was at 8. Documentation drift is a lie-by-omission; the registry must be honest.
Impact:
docs/ui-ux/F82-email.md: score header, TASTE pre-flight table, Remaining Gaps table, Justification section.docs/POLISH.md: F82 UX cell.docs/specs/F82-email.md §11: Slice 18 audit table + Remaining Gaps updated.docs/improvements/2026-06/week-26/f82-ux-score-update.md: improvement ledger entry.- No code changes.
Tests:
- Re-verified: 4619 backend tests passed, 98.04% coverage. 10931 frontend tests passed, 0 TypeScript errors. No changes → no regressions.
2026-06-27 — Slice 19: LabelRail skeleton + mobile breakpoint handling
Type: UI Polish
Summary:
- LabelRail loading skeleton: replaced the invisible empty
<div />in theisLoadingbranch with 7Skeletonitems (one compose-button-shaped + six nav-item-shaped), giving users an accurate visual signal while labels fetch instead of a blank white rail. - Mobile breakpoint: wrapped the three-pane layout in
hidden md:flex; added aflex md:hiddennoticet('use_mobile_app')centred in the viewport for screens below 768 px. Web mail is desktop-first by design; Lumi’s mobile-first strategy is the native KMP app (F79/F82 Slice 11). The behavior is now intentional (redirect notice) rather than undefined (silent overflow). - Added
use_mobile_appi18n key to all 62 locale files (en + vi proper translations + 60 English placeholders), consistent with prior slice pattern. - 2 new unit tests in
MailPage.test.tsx. - Closes the two audit gaps holding F82 UI at 7; raises UI 7 → 8.
Reason:
docs/ui-ux/F82-email.mdlisted both items as open gaps. POLISH.md UI = 7 is in the polish backlog (scores ≤7 require action). Both gaps were verifiable via TypeScript + unit tests without needing a browser session.
Impact:
frontend/src/pages/mail/LabelRail.tsx: Skeleton import + 7-item loading branch.frontend/src/pages/mail/MailPage.tsx:hidden md:flex/flex md:hidden+use_mobile_appkey.frontend/src/i18n/locales/*/email.json:use_mobile_appkey added to all 62 locales.frontend/src/test/MailPage.test.tsx: 2 new tests.docs/ui-ux/F82-email.md: UI 7 → 8, gaps closed.docs/POLISH.md: F82 UI[7]→[8].docs/specs/F82-email.md §11: Slice 19 audit table + remaining gaps updated.
Tests:
- 2 new frontend unit tests pass. 0 TypeScript errors.
pnpm validate-i18nclean. Design tokens clean. Backend unchanged — 98.04% coverage.
2026-06-27 — Slice 20: Admin Domain & Mailbox Provisioning UI
Type: Feature (admin provisioning frontend)
Summary:
- Added
DomainsTabtoEmailSettingsPage.tsx— visible only toowner/adminroles. Provides: domain list with status badges, “Add domain” form, DNS records table with copy-to-clipboard per record, “Verify DNS” button, per-domain mailbox list + “Add mailbox” form, per-mailbox alias management (list/add/delete), per-mailbox access grant management (list/grant/revoke with role selector read/full). - Fixed 3 Rule-3 (hardcoded string) violations found while editing the file:
sig_deletereplace-hack →{t('cancel')}, hardcodedCancel→{t('cancel')},Label ID (optional)→{t('filter_add_label')}. - Added 11 new
mailApicalls and 11 new TanStack Query hooks for admin domain/mailbox APIs. - Added 3 new query keys (
domains,aliases,access). - Added 4 new TypeScript interfaces (
EmailDomain,EmailDomainDnsRecord,MailboxAlias,MailboxAccessGrant). - Added 43 new i18n keys to all 62 locale files (en + vi proper translations, 60 English fallbacks).
Reason:
- Backend domain/mailbox provisioning APIs were shipped in Slice 2 (2026-06-23) but had no frontend admin surface. The admin flow — “add domain → get DNS records → verify → create mailboxes” — was completely missing from the UI, making the product unusable for a new admin.
- This was the last medium UX gap from the
docs/ui-ux/F82-email.mdaudit. Closing it advances UX from 8 → 9.
Impact:
frontend/src/api/endpoints.ts: 4 new interfaces, 11 newmailApicalls.frontend/src/api/queryKeys.ts: 3 new query keys.frontend/src/hooks/queries/useMail.ts: 11 new hooks.frontend/src/pages/mail/EmailSettingsPage.tsx:DomainsTab,DomainRow,DomainStatusBadge,DomainDnsRecords,MailboxRowcomponents; admin role gate; 3 Rule-3 fixes.frontend/src/i18n/locales/*/email.json: 43 new keys in all 62 locales.frontend/src/test/EmailSettingsPage.test.tsx:useAuthStoremock + 5 new tests.docs/ui-ux/F82-email.md: admin setup gap ✅, UX 8 → 9.docs/POLISH.md: F82 UX[8]→[9].docs/specs/F82-email.md §11: Slice 20 audit table + remaining gaps updated.docs/improvements/2026-06/week-26/f82-admin-domain-mailbox-ui.md: improvement ledger entry.
Tests:
- 5 new unit tests:
domains_tab_shown_for_admin,domains_tab_hidden_for_member,domains_tab_shows_add_domain_form,domains_tab_create_domain_shows_dns_records,domains_tab_verify_calls_api. Backend unchanged — 98.04% coverage.
2026-06-27 — Slice 21: Security hardening (MIME size guard + audit correction)
Type: Security Hardening
Summary:
- Added
_MAX_INBOUND_MIME_B64_BYTES = 40 MBpre-decode size guard toInboundWebhookView.post(after HMAC verification, beforebase64.b64decode). Returns 413 for oversized payloads. - Corrected security audit doc:
DOMPurify.sanitize()was already present inReadingPane.tsxandComposeDialog.tsx; the prior audit incorrectly marked frontend HTML sanitization as “deferred”. Both gaps now ✅ indocs/security/F82-email.md. - Security score updated 8 → 9 in audit doc and POLISH.md.
Impact:
backend/apps/mail/views.py:_MAX_INBOUND_MIME_B64_BYTESconstant + size guard (9 lines).backend/tests/test_mail_inbound.py:test_inbound_oversized_mime_returns_413(1 new test).docs/security/F82-email.md: Gaps corrected; score 8 → 9.docs/POLISH.md: F82 Security[8]→[9].docs/specs/F82-email.md §11: Slice 21 audit table + remaining-gaps list updated.docs/improvements/2026-06/week-26/f82-security-hardening.md: improvement ledger entry.
Tests:
- 1 new backend test. Overall: 4620 passed, 98.04% coverage. No frontend changes.
2026-06-28 — Slice 22: Final coverage hardening (dead code removal + reachable error paths)
Type: QA/QC Hardening
Summary:
- Removed dead
try/exceptwrapper aroundemail.message_from_bytes()invacation.py(stdlib never raises; identical pattern removed frommime_utils.pyin slice 13). - Added 14 new backend tests covering previously-uncovered serializer validation paths, race-condition IntegrityError fallbacks, and 404 edge cases.
apps/mailmodule coverage raised to 99.18%.- QA/QC score updated 9 → 10 in POLISH.md.

Tests:
- 14 new backend tests. Overall: 4632 passed, 13 skipped, 98.14% coverage. No frontend changes.
2026-06-28 — Slice 25: Permission-denial coverage: same-org inaccessible mailbox
Type: QA/QC Hardening
Summary:
- Added 3 new backend tests covering the last genuinely reachable uncovered paths in
apps/mail/views.py: permission denial when a same-org member with no access grant attempts to create a signature (views.py:1107) or filter (views.py:1147) for an inaccessible mailbox, and theMyAddressesViewdedup guard (views.py:1301) when a member owns a mailbox AND holds an explicit access grant on it. - Corrected the spec §11 Slice 9 tracking note that incorrectly left scheduling and E2E
case 30 marked
⚠️after both shipped in slices 10 and 10b. apps/mailmodule coverage raised from 99.18% to 99.34%.
Impact:

Tests:
- 3 new backend tests. Overall: 4643 passed, 98.14% coverage. No frontend changes.
2026-07-01 — Session: Billing store-receipt test regression fix
Type: QA/QC Bug Fix (test suite regression — not F82 code)
Summary:
- Found 9 failing tests in
backend/tests/test_store_receipt.pycaused by commitd8b67a4(feat(billing): resolve_store_product seats + billing_alert — F24 §5 / F30 §12 — refreshed 2026-06-29). That commit updated the billing service’s product ID grammar fromcom.locuno.lumi.*tolumi_ai_pro_<seats>_<period>but the test file was not updated. - All 9 affected tests now pass. The 3 tests that already passed (those not using store product IDs) continue to pass.
Root cause:
resolve_store_product("com.locuno.lumi.team.monthly")raisesStoreVerificationErrorbecausecom.locuno.lumi.*IDs are neither in_LEGACY_PRODUCT_PREFIXES(com.runlumi.*) nor in_NEW_ASC_PRODUCTS(lumi_ai_pro_*). The view returned 400; tests expected 200.
Impact:
backend/tests/test_store_receipt.py: 9 tests updated (product IDs + plan fixtures + assertions);plan_ai_profixture added usingget_or_create(migration0010seeds this plan); module docstring updated with current grammar.
Tests:
- 12 store-receipt tests now pass (0 failed). No F82 mail tests changed. Backend suite coverage unchanged at 97.81% (missing modules in local venv, not production failures).
2026-07-09 — Slice 26: Sidebar nav entry (web discoverability)
Type: Bug Fix (UX gap)
Summary:
- Root cause: Slice 16 (2026-06-26) registered
/mail,/mail/$threadId, and/settings/emailinroutes/routeTree.ts, making the surface reachable — but no Sidebar nav entry was ever added. The full F82 email surface was shipped yet discoverable by direct URL only; Android already surfaced a “Mail” tile (§ nav row), leaving web without platform parity. - Fix: Added a Mail item to the existing Connect nav group
(
Company Hub · Messages · Mail · Telegram) infrontend/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, using the lucideMailicon →/mail. Placed in Connect (not a new top-level group) to keep the nav calm and avoid cognitive overload — Mail is a communication channel alongside Messages/Telegram. - i18n: new
sidebar:mailkey added to all 62 locale dirs with per-language translations (fallback isvi, and the parity test requires every locale to carry the same keys, so en/vi alone was insufficient). - No unread badge wired:
badgeFor()only surfaces counts where a real aggregator source exists (notifications, team messages); Telegram is likewise badge-less. A mail-unread badge (INBOX count fromuseMailLabels) is a possible follow-up, deliberately deferred.
Impact:
frontend/src/components/Sidebar.tsx: 1 import + 1 nav item.frontend/src/i18n/locales/*/sidebar.json: +1 key × 62 locales.- No route or backend change; route tree already carried Mail (DIAGRAMS.md unchanged).
Tests:
tsc --noEmitclean; i18n key-parity suite (all 62 locales vs en) green; Sidebar unit test unaffected (asserts individual labels, not an exhaustive Connect list). Contract Graph ownership note: the shipped domain-list route and router-owned filter and signature deletion operations are represented byEmailFilterViewSetandEmailSignatureViewSet; this does not change the provider, runtime, or native evidence boundaries. 2026-08-03 — Mobile label-load recovery
Type: Reliability / UX hardening
Summary:
- Shared native Mail now keeps the thread list usable when label loading fails, retains the last successful filter chips, and shows localized warning plus retry affordances.
- Pull-to-refresh uses the same label-loading path, so a refresh failure is visible instead of being silently discarded.
- No named-device, provider, or production proof is claimed by this source/JVM slice; those gaps remain explicit in the Contract Graph and mobile audit.
